Co2 setup for a 30 gallon breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know any links to DIY sugar Co2 systems, but I do know Jungle makes a reasonable priced fermentation unit that would do a 30 br. It's like $40.00 tops for the system and if you're not all that great with DIY like me it's well worth it. A pressurized CO2 system is not something to play around with, my friend made one an ended up losing an entire tank of fish due to some stupid mistake. Also, I have a 30 breeder planed tank, and I use 2 separate 65w compact flourescent fixtures, it's a bit much but I'm happy with it. You could get away with one, but the tank is so big you're gonna have dark edges because the light wont cover that much of the tank. Anyway, good luck on your tank and have fun.

I have a 29 gal plant tank and I like the Red Sea CO2 fermentation chamber. It works well and is cost about $40. Lighting should be about 3 watts per gallons so pretty much look for a compact flourescent about 90 watts. Corallife makes one for about $90 plus shipping. Otherwise you'll have to go with mutiple lights. So unless Petsmart has compact flourescent lighting you'll be wasting your money. Don't bother with the plant lights they sell at Petco or Petsmart they're crap with no wattage. I work for Petco so I should know. I like the liquid fertilizers but you definately need them not for the plants food but for iron supplementation. Without it your plants will turn yellow and ugly. Sand is fine, I use it in mine but try some marine or aquarium sand because play sand will never get all the contaminents out of it. The only problem I found with sand is that plants with underformed roots don't stay in the sand well. However I through in a little of the laterite I got from Petsmart. The only problem is I didn't wash it out that well and every time I go digging in my tank a red cloud fogs up my tank. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks toogoodjohns & Tucc185...............that really help me out.

Howdy,

I suggest to first try w/o CO2 and see how it works. You can always add it later. I wasted quite a few bucks on a system and my plants did just fine without ...

after much trial and error.... i have had success using the eco bio complete substrate. did the laterite in the past, yes can be messy! i have 4 55 watt power compact bulbs over my 75 gal tank and i do not use co2.... i just add flourish excel from seachem regularly... yes, i do know that the rate of growth with my plants is a little slower than if i were using co2, but the plants are "humming" along and i do not have a smuch to worry about like i would if i had a co2 tank, the regulator and such..... just my experience am passing along... good luck with your tank... planted tanks are the ****!!!
