The fish in question was a little stressed and showed some slight damage to the fins when i took the pics. My Midevil had recently just decided that he wanted the 135gal to himself and started terrorizing every other fish (Oscar, convict, eclipse catfish, and 2 Silver Dollars) . I removed the Midevil after taking these pics. He's roughly 9" (head to tail) and just over 1 year old. What do you think? He was sold to me as a "Rio Junapan Coatzacoalcos"...

What makes you think coatz? Ive read conflicting reports on the differences so i have no idea how to differentiate between the 2. They seem like the same fish to me but I'm curious to read others opinions...

I believe it's zonatus. Coatz, lateral line goes right to the eye. Here's mine.

The coatz I've seen and kept have the lateral line extening the length of the body like Andicca said. Great looking vieja regardless of what it is.

I didn't know about the lateral line. Good info.
I played with the lighting and got a pic where he is showing a darker lateral line but it still doesn't reach the eye. His color varies so much he has tricked my wife into thinking it's a different fish (obviously she doesn't pay much to attention the tank). Since I've removed the Midevil (about a week) the lateral line is much more noticeable as there were times when it would almost completely disappear, like in the first pic.
