Could someone tell me the difference between a "red tapajos" and a "cobra" crenicichla. Are they variations or is the "cobra" the juvenile coloration for the "red tapajos"?

Nope, they are different, if you are talkin about tapajos red and cobras. They are relatively easy to tell apart, even the juv. phases are different. 'red tapajos' as adults are pretty much completely red, where as in cobras the females are the only ones that get really red. Tapajos red also have a black blotch behind their pectoral fin when they are mature. not sure if they have it when they are juv though. Juv. cobras are pretty easy to pick out, they have a sort of yellow camoflauge color to them...really striking. I have some cobras, I'll post some pictures when i get some more up, and MTN PIKE has some tapajos red...we'll post...so you can see the difference...;)

:banhim: i like cobrallllllllllllaaaaaaa

Major difefrence as adults and juvies, Red Tapajos are orange as fry that turn bright red as adults, cobras have the cool cammo pattern (thus their name) as juvies, the females do turn red, but not as red as The Red Tapajos.

I like 'flame pike'.... & 'fire' pikes are the RED ATABAPOS??? they are both brilliantly colored fish - will be interesting to see them grow + mature......
Cobras are slowly losing their 'camo' - very nice as a group....so far so good!

no...the red atabapos aren't the aren't the true fire atabapos...they are actually C. sp. cf. lugubris atabapo'...in other words they are just a variant of lugubris. don't get quite as nice as true atabapos...:( ..some may not even get all that red...stick wit flame...:D they get super red!

Ya, three of our cobras have ditched the camo, too. One of them is clearly a female and beginning to look nice.

Tapajos I and Tapajos II are better names. Or Flame Pike and Cobra....using Tapajos Red and Red Tapajos gets confusing...
