u better be careful they dont escape because they will infest your place unlike the exotic species. put vaseline around the top of the container for an extra precaution b/c babies will slip thought the openings

Absolutely agree!!! If it was Dubia, discoids or almost any other they will die when it gets colder but the american cockroach can live. I would get another kind of cockroach....dubias are great. If these get out then they WILL reproduce and you Will be on one of those "Nastiest Bug Invasions" shows on animal planet. :D:ROFL:

I feed mine cat and dog food plus bits of whatever I eat when I think of them. Fruits, veggies, meat, bread, they get almost anything I eat. They breed like crazy but they don't seem to mind crowding (prefer to bunch together, especially the adults over the newly hatched) so I just provide plenty of egg crate layers and clean it out completely once a week.

i have dubias and they are great...so easy to care for and i dont have to think about them or worry about them escaping...

and as for food.. remember what the roaches eat will essentially be what your pet eats.. oranges and bananas work well.. along with dog cat and fish food... there is also roach diets out there and they eat the cricket food as well..actually pretty much anything you stick in there they will eat

I wouldn't worry about infestation too much. Roaches are out there; if your house provides good habitat, they will infest it whether the founders come from your colony or elsewhere.
