do coconut shells have any impact on PH ? i'm thinking about growing moss on some coconut shells

I would think not, but it would probably decay into a lot of particulate matter if you leave the hairy part on the outside.

That's an interesting decoration though.

mine have had no impact on water chemistry and have not rotted or anything of the sort they make great caves

I'm intrigued, I've never seen anyone use one.

So it doesn't affect your water quality at all? How long did you soak it/wash it for?

it dosent effect the water quality at all..just boil in for half an hour and soak in it water for 3 days or so. because they release a lot of tannins. once you feel the tannins are no more you can add them to your tank. you can leave the fibers on to give it a more natural look.

If i do it, i'm going to boil the shell for at least 20 minutes

Howe1243 (or some other combo of numbers) sells coconut shells with moss already on em... on aquabid. (I have no commercial interest with this seller)

Coconuts barely float in saltwater. Do they sink easily in fresh, or do they have do be soaked like wood? It seems like an intriguing idea.

PS: It is doubtful they would decay quickly. They float around in the ocean for months. If they can still sprout after that, it can't rot fast at all. But then, it is the HUSK being exposed to water, not the inner hairy shell.

i scraped all the white stuff out of it cut a semicircle out as the entrace and i only rinsed it under the tap for a few seconds and it does not seem to be leaching any tannins i will post a pic in a sec

here they are two halves
