So, due to a heater malfunction and my backup heater disappearing into the void my 10 year old blind ocar had to spend 5 entire days in >50 degree water with last 3 days being >45. Somehow the bastards still alive, idk if this dude is just a genetic monster, or if hes just to old to know when to die but im honestly amazed. i feel like i should get him to female oscars so he can pass on his cold tolerant genes for future pond oscars.

Oscars can be found as far south as Paraguay, in S America where water temps often drop fairly low.
The further south you go in S America, the colder it can get.
I've kept cichlids from Uruguay that needed a cool down into the low 60s/high 50s, just to stay healthy, and would spawn at very low temps.

Pretty impressive. Did not know that about Oscars-- but all in all it's a misconception (one I shared once upon a time) that SA always means soft, warm water. It's a big continent with a lot of variation in altitude, latitude, climate, chemistry, etc. Even discus live in more varied conditions than most people think.
