Whitecloud Mountain minnows, American flagfish, rosy reds, weather loaches and hillstream loaches are all species that come to mind that are fairly common in the hobby. In addition to those you can find in your LFS there are also tons of native species that would work well in aquaria. I notice you're from England so I don't know what the collecting laws are like over there and I don't know what species you have. There are also tons of North American species that you might be able to get ahold of. Darters, madtoms, mudminnows, killifish, various cyprinids, pygmy sunfish etc.

I agree with the above, though the problem with hillstream loaches (and most of the other coldwater loaches) is that they like a high current enviroment and really good water quality. High current usually isn't the best with fancy goldfish and goldfish tanks often don't have the most wonderful water quality, at least compared to what those loaches need.

What size tank do you have? That will either cut down or add to the amount of species you can keep. If you had a very large tank you could actually have several different enviroments in it, like river enviroment in one side and very calm in another part for the goldies. A larger tank could also fit larger fish.

Sticklebacks come to mind i collected them when i lived in Scotland kept them with golds, koi and weather loachs, guppys are good and whitecloud minnows but i cant remember to many small species only the larger ones like trout, perch, pike and eel.

You know you could travel around to some game wardens and see if they have any ideas to help you out with, when i lived in Scotland there was a game warden down the road from me and since i was into fish BIG TIME he was very helpful into helping me collect and also the best spots for just fishing.
