Collecting fish

Try going at night with a good flashlight and a net. Its way easier and the flashlight does a good bit of blinding so their easier to catch, you may also find a good bit of noctornal species like catfish and lots of crayfish

i agree, for small fish walk the shoreline at night with a flashlight and net. They are "sleeping" at this time and thus much easier to catch. May take some practice both for catching them, and IDing them in the water, but i think thats your best bet, plus your fish wont have a hole in their mouth from the hook. I've caught bass, bullhead, pickerel, all types of sunfish, and white and yellow perch this way before as a kid. And i live in Westchester County, just north of NYC.

You don't need one if you're under 16

Pardon me and don't take any of what I'm about to say as offensive. But I'd just hate to see someone get screwed over for doing something like fishing... But I will warn you. DO NOT catch any "baby" bass. Bass season is over, which I think you may know. But just wanted to warn you also not to go around saying you're putting that fish in a tank. Legally it's "okay" but people here like to make their own laws and honestly even if you're right a powermad cop/warden has the higher say on things. So when in doubt and not condoning this persay... but out of experience. Keep your mouth shut. Don't ask questions to any strangers, don't say you're keeping it as a pet. Just say you'll eat it. Because anglers around here tend to be pricks and know-it-alls. I had one call the cops on me once--- I learnt the hard way. I ended up having to go to my car to look for the laws of nj, then come back, then find that the officer "accidentally" tipped the bucket with my catch. Which was a very nice looking sunfish. It wasn't even a baby.... Any pike, muskie, etc. Don't think about it. Don't ask people at petstores-- assume their ignorant and stupid all together.

Just wanted to share this because most of those people look down upon you as you're committing a crime of life and then a second later you see them throwing trash in the water or such. Oh and there are SOME species of sunfish you CANNOT keep. Word of the wise-- stick to the bluegills and the bright colored red breasted sunnies. Even if -YOU- can tell the difference. Most people that fish don't know to squats about fishing and will mix one and the other. JUST BECAUSE they -CAN- catch a fish DOES not make them an expert. As I stated just word of the wise. Avoid drawing too much attention especially in lake hopatcong because the wardens there and in saxton falls are powermad.

Which I've dealt with personally and have been harassed. Even though the rules clearly state nothing on "specifics". Do not call the dnr- they're not helpful. Most people at the dnr don't know INDEPTH on the rule. UNLESS UNLESS you speak to a HIGHER up. But the ones on that speed dial don't know squat. EVEN though THEY make the rules or enforce em and they like to add their little twist to it.

Sorry if I came off rude or off the edge towards anyone. But this place is very very strict about rules and their "morals". Even if you have your own morals, they don't care. You don't need to hide it; but you don't need to flaunt it. Basically don't go around your school saying you have so and so as a pet. Avoid keeping species that have "closing season". Even if you caught it in the right time. Nobody knows when you really caught it. UNLESS you buy the fish from a reputable source and KEEP the receipt then yeah.

Again sorry, thought I'd be helpful. Usually I like to just keep my mouth shut and let people find out the hard-way but I felt bad cause of how it went with me.
