Are there any places in Southern california where you can go collect fish? What kind of fish would you find in socal?

There's 3-spine sticklebacks by the Devil's Punchbowl, desert pupfish and tilapia around the Salton Sea, Gambusia holbrooki in most waterways, largemouth bass in creeks/lakes. What are you aiming for? Fresh or salt? Doesn't take much to google that info.

Thanks for the info. I am looking for freshwater. I live 15 mins away from hansen dam so i looked that up too and it says that there are bluegills, catfish, and a few others in there. Are bluegills sunfish? I would like to catch a few sunfish if thats what a blue gill is. Do bluegills live near the shore? I dont have a fishing pole so i cant go too far out into the lake.

Are there any other spots that people go to in southern california?

i've always wondered that, but I believe you will need a permit. Phil also mentioned that you would also need nets, not fishing rod and reel, ahd aerated wells or buckets, to keep the fish.

you need a permit? oh well then i dont know if i wanna go through all the trouble of getting a permit..

Yes bluegill are sunfish, and I would suggest putting a minnow trap in some shallow weedy area.
If you try without a permit, make sure you don't get caught or you'll be fined up the wazoo.
