Hmm I've tried keeping local wood in my tanks before but it never works. Maple and oak. They developed so much slime the fish couldn't keep up and it stated comi g off and drifting around my tank. Wonder what I was doing wrong

I thought there are some woods which arent suitable because of their natural oils? Or maybe im mistaken?

I think the oil issue only comes into play with pines and cedars, which you wouldn't want anyway

My 2, 6" plecos keep up with the slime easily. As for the oils, I believe it is only cedars and pines. Im not sure about the pine, but cedar contains alot of oils. I will admit I am actually using a large piece of pine in my largest tank. It was seasoned for years and was well dry of all oils before I used it. As far as I can tell nothing is affecting my fish. I have not had any fish die or any problems with disease in the two months the system has been running.

As a side note, I find maple takes the longest to become water logged

Update - The wood was hardwood, I dunno what kind, not maple. It started to develop a white slime around it, but I don't think it was hurting anything. I took it out cuz I didn't like the way it looked but for future reference I don't think there's anything wrong with sticking a branch in your tank, just don't use an evergreen/coniferous tree.

Ok maybe ill try it in the growout tank as a test run. If it goes well then ill add some to the main display tank.
