Ill try and do this. Quick question I am going to use all purpose sand is that aquarium safe if not is there another natural looking aquarium sand?

Is it the all purpose play sand from menards? If so, yes. That’s what I have. If not can you post a picture of the bag?

It is all purpose sand from Quickrete. I have been doing some more looking into poolfilter sand and it seems like a much better color once its in the aquarium so I will porbably pick some of that up instead.

Ok. Yeah I’m not familiar with that sand. I know the play sand is safe.
Pool filter sand looks nice. That was my first choice but I couldn’t find it at the store so ended up with playsand.

My gar tank was all collected substrate from my local beach. I just rinsed it in tap water. Assuming you collect it from land instead of in the river you are fine. I wouldn’t even bleach the rocks if this was my tank.

I have never bleached rocks collected from land and have never had any problems. I have my own pit mine and can dig all I want to but this time of year I would be crazy to do that. Instead I recently bought a couple bags of the all purpose gravel from Home Depot for my 110 gallon tub. Just rinse and serve!

I have also used the play sand in hillstream tanks to good effect. Mixed with the local gravel it looks quite nice. I wanted the look of a local trout stream and it fit the bill. The pool sand is sifted so you get a uniform size with that.

I collected substrate from a local river years ago, and am still using it. It was a long process to clean, but worth it IMO. I scooped it up from the river bed in a aquarium net and rinsed it in the net while in the river to get rid of most of the fines. I then rinse a couple pounds at a time in a plastic tub with tap water (outside) to get rid of any other fines or organic matter. Then bleached the sand to kill anything left, rinsed again, dried, and then used a 2mm sieve to get the larger grains out.
I kept rays on this substrate for several years w/o any problems. I did use coated sands prior and had issues.
