so, i love fish, and I am a freshman in college. I got a 10 gallon tank, and stocked it with 2 african cichlids. now I know im going to catch some heat from yall who think the tanks too small, but there only about 2 inch's long at most. One of them is bigger then the other, and he picks on the smaller one. how can i stop is from doing this without breaking my college funding.

thanks

hahaha over in 1

Get rid of the africans and go with something a little different. start with something simple in the way of community fish like danios or mollies. do frequent water chages. overfilter. water changes. and when you get the time, go garage saling and find a 30 gallon tank. they are usually the size of your dresser, are easier to keep, and you can get different fish like a few africans, kirbs, or (like me) Rams. I am very conetnt with my dorm room 30.

Give the fish away and the tank. That's how you can save your college funding.

hahah damn, nice one. i mean if i posted on this forum a lot i would be an ******* to people who are new to this site to. instead of giving good information and helping, id just troll and be a dick.

and to hangstout, thanks. My dorm only allows 10 gallon tanks, i would have a bigger tank, but i am held in size by the building. I didnt mean i dont have money to take care of my fish, i just dont have loads of cash/the facilities to house a bigger tank.

thanks for the info hangstout

no but seriously. This hobby is expensive and those fish need more space.
It looks like you've read around a few threads what did you expect?

You don't get fish to be nicer to each other, and if you are in school for 8 months, that is like 7 and 3/4 months too long for those fish to stay in that tank, give or maybe sell those fish, go with something smaller like guppies, mollies, African dwarf frogs, shimp?

More space. You need a bigger tank so they have some room.
They are territorial fish. You need a bigger tank.

What type of Africans?
(Generalization here, but there's more than just mbunas folks). Would have been better to post in a different section (General Qs or African)
I would stay away from Lake Malawi and Lake Victorian cichlids.

Maybe go for Lake Tanganyika cichlids. They are VERY slow growers (1-2 inches a year), and some species max out at 3-4 inches. Calvus cichlids are cool and again only grow 1 inch a year.

There's lots of Shell-species from Lake Tanganyika (can live in snail shells). Great for 10 gallon setups.

Or like someone else mentioned, a few blue rams looks nice.
