college dorm 10 gallon tank help

1. You are posting about African cichlids in the "Central and South American" section of the forum. (Just FYI)

2. What kind of African cichlids do you have?

There are three basic types: Mbuna, Haps and Peacocks.. Mbuna are notoriously aggressive and very difficult to keep in small tanks. Haps and Peacock eventually grow very large and hence are not recommended in small tank.

But, if forced to make a choice, I would recommend small (juvenile) Haps for a tank that size. Please note, you will definitely have to upgrade or sell these fish once they are about 4-5 inches.

Another (very good) alternative is to go for "dwarf cichlids". These include Ram Cichlids and Apistos.. Their maximum size is suitable for your tank and they are very beautiful and have great attitude.

Tanganyikan Cichlids are also an option, but they are quite rare and expensive in my part of the world..You can check at your LFS or your favorite online store.

Good luck,
Sid

That only applies to Lake Malawi cichlids.
I'm assuming he has mbuna type (common african cichlid).

Sorry for sounding so harsh but its true. For a 10 gallon get some guppies or something. The only way tot help your situation with the 2 african cihclids is to buy a bigger tank and/or introduce more african cichlids. Neither you want or can't do. You can maybe get rid of 1 of the africans and keep it a solo african tank. Seriously this is all you really can do.

hahah damn, nice one. i mean if i posted on this forum a lot i would be an ******* to people who are new to this site to. instead of giving good information and helping, id just troll and be a dick.

and to hangstout, thanks. My dorm only allows 10 gallon tanks, i would have a bigger tank, but i am held in size by the building. I didnt mean i dont have money to take care of my fish, i just dont have loads of cash/the facilities to house a bigger tank.

thanks for the info hangstout

What do you expect, he's a FRESHMAN in college. Wait till he's in his Jr Sr year (hopefully he has a REAL major); that'll boost his maturity.

I new everything when I was 19 too.
Now I know nothing..

i honestly didn't come into this forum looking for trouble. and i apologize for posting in the wrong section. thank you for all the info from everyone who posted to help. and for second guessing my major, its Wildlife and Fisheries resources. So fish as a life time job will be my future. I did not claim to know EVERYTHING and i did not state that i knew anything.

this is my last post, im done with the harassment. ill find somewhere else. thanks

edit- i noticed I did not answer what kind of cichlids they look like. They are black with slight orange from the gills to the tail, one has blue in its face and the other has just black. thats all i know. I bought them from the local mom and pop petstore.

A single African tank would work. I had a 20 gal with a 4.5 inch mbuna in it about 15-20 yrs ago that was cool and very interactive, as much as most CA's...try that or any of the other suggestions aforementioned.

Dont be so sensitive man...just heed the advice and roll with it.

Good Luck!

Turn it into a planted tank. The tank isn't really big enough for most fish, but it can still look really nice.

Also, there is an ignore list so you don't have to see the trolls and the idiots.
