Well.. before the california money crisis.. (about 5 years ago) there were a lot of funds available for college students...

I myself graduated last year doing 5 years in UCI.... I can say that my parents didnt help me pay for school... but they did pay for my first two years of housing and food....

California have what you call cal grants... based on your GPA in High School and your families financial background.... with that help...I got about a 90% of my college funds paid in full.. But i did took out loans for personal use like books......

So it just depends on your family situation..... The problem is... Most Family issues you hear on TV and movies are above the mini financial range... so the government do not grant any support for families who make $50,000 plus a year.... (Dunno about 2009)

We get paid alot more in Australia, but everything is probably much more expensive. Money conversion from AUD to USD isn't such a difference anymore either.

I think the majority of the talk about college has to do with government grants and scholarships. You see, without those most would not be able to afford college. There is a good mixture here of students that have school paid for, students that have their parents pay, and students that get loans (myself).

Yeah without scholarships and grants and stuff I would have to pay quite a bit. Also for me my family doesn't make much, we live by week-to-week checks. IDC we have a house(rent), and food and my fish tanks, what else do I need? So the government paid for all of it besides like a little less than a $100 each semester for a full time student. Might change when I got to a higher price college but who knows. My Bro though when he goes to college(in 1 year) I doubt will pay anything since it will be 2 kids in college who still live at the house for now.

I have worked a full-time job and went to school since before I even graduated high school. I have never qualified for grants or been awarded a schalarship which is odd, because I carry a 3.8+ GPA. Anywho, I have paid for it all myself, a couple loans when I started, but cash from there. My parents didn't hav ethe money to help so it was my decision to pay. Now, my employer does a pretty good job of covering my tuition.

In america parent like to set there kids up to succede and the govmt doesnt help at all. And a good university is like 60,000 a year and an entry level job just out of high school is like 40,000 so we kind of need them.

You don't consider Pell grants and Stafford loans help from the gov't? I don't know about you but how many students out there who pay for themselves would qualify for a loan of that amount through a private bank.

I qualified for both to pay for my tuition at a state university until I had a part time job that made more than that the minimum to qualify.
