I think I'd probably move him out at the 8 inch mark...and I'd do 50% (maybe a little less) water changes every week, just like on our other tanks. I've never had any non african cichlid before, so maybe I'll give it a shot... If he does grow too fast, he can just be put in a bigger tank back home. College is only 45 minutes from my home, so I could even continue to care for him.
I'm still thinking that an AC110 might be too much water movement? 500 gallons per hour, right? Would that be too turbulent?

I still say a ac110 is overkill for a 20gallon. A 8" midas in a 20gallon would be ridiculous. If you kept him in there until the 4-5" mark that would be fine but 8" is too big. Did you think about the fact that if you keep him solo for 4-5 months and try to put him with another fish its nots going to work, regardless of tank size.

Get some small datnoids, like 1-2''.
Then you can have them for way longer and still have some cool fish

an 8" midas in a 20 gallon tank is completely ridiculous.
if you got a 1" midas that would give you about 3 months, maybe a little more.
he might grow a little slower because his general health and growth rates both will be hindered severely, the rate at which he is affected will only increase as does his size.

i brought a 55g to college a year ago and bought a 3" oscar.
i'm moving back to school(5 hours away) with a 75g that now houses the same oscar at 10" and a 4" saum(whom i believe to be female).
moving this tank/fish 300 miles is a complete and total pain in the a ss, i had to do it last may and will have to again the following may.
stoked to be graduating, won't have this problem anymore.

when i lived in the dorms i didn't keep fish, i waited until i had my own house and could setup a 55 or bigger.
you can still setup that 20 but i wouldn't do a cichlid bigger than a firemouth, convict or salvini.
that is still stretching it, you would have to move it out as it would outgrow the tank as well.

something more realistic would be dwarf cichlids or mollies or guppies or something.
also, 500gph is completely absurd on a 20g.
for a tank that small, a large HOB filter is more than sufficient.
good luck man.

What would the monsterfishkeepers think about a 20L grow out tank that I could take with me to college? I was thinking maybe a smaller midas or something along those lines. As for filteration- Could I put an AC110 on there for bio and a smaller one for some mech? Or would that create too much water movement?
I'm trying to find a fish to grow in 2 years that could be bumped into a 120 after I leave dorms and get a house.
Any suggestions?
Apistogrammas would do perfect in 20L or german blue rams.

If you're looking for a tough fish, get a male convict. He'll get big and beefy but probably would be ok long-term in the 20-long so you wouldn't have to worry about moving him.

And I know several have said it already, but an 8" Midas in a 20 gal. is just cruelty. They are awesome fish but they deserve much better.
