thanks i know about stunted were i got my ornat there was a bigger one that was stunted. and there not cichlid pellets!

it doesn't matter if their cichlid pellets or not. i think ur missing my point..

i have to disaggre with those saying that color enchancers dont affect bichirs but just the environment.
There was a noticable change after i started using pellets with natural color enchancers

Okay try feeding those color enhancer and place them in all white tank. White background white substrates and no decor at all. See if it really enhance the color.

Done this experiment already with CB laps as they tend to be the hardiest to get stabilize. It didn't work. In fact I've done a lot of crazy experiments in the past with different bichir species especially the most common available such as sene, polli, del, ornate, lap and endli. Been experimenting on what will make them really look good and non of those color enhancer works in all white tank.

A fact for you bichirs get darker and get better color as they age and more settled in the tank. Some may take a while some early. Also most WC bichirs except bichir complex (But some do) will still shows it's patterns in high contrast even in white substrates. CB tend to bleach out more in lighter substrates.

i never said they only get better colors by getting color enhancers (krill in my case, from NewLifeSpectrum pellets) and it would be naive to think that the they would get good colors in a all white tank, pellets or not, since they show their best colors with a dark substrate.
You were suggesting that it does nothing to help the polypterus, which I simply dont aggree on. I have had my polypterus for months and some for years, always with a dark substrate with the same dark background and at the same timepoint, shortly after i started trying the NLS pellets most of them got much greener; palmas palmas, palmas polli, retropinnis, ornatipinnis, senegalus, lapradei, ropefish, delhezi,

The greenish yellow color occurs when they been keep in a darker substrates for a long time. Try that with a new 4 month old bichir even in dark substrates. I mention before that the older they get the better color they get.

You said, "i have to disaggre with those saying that color enchancers dont affect bichirs but just the environment." So if color enhancer food enhance color so why not in white color tank? If it does help they should color up nicely in white color tank.

My point is, it's mainly the environment that they color up nicely or not.

i have no interest in putting my polypterus in a white tank to see if the pellets would help, i said that "it would be naive to think that the they would get good colors in a all white tank, pellets or not"

I once bought some palmas polli that was in a white substrate tank and their color was almost completely washed out. So I think (my personal thoughts, not by experience) that it would be hard for color enhancing food to show much result on an already washed out color.
If on the other hand the fish´s color is good to begin with, the color enhancer helps make it even better.

I know what you said about the color getting better with age, but my polypterus are not all the same age, bought at various times at various sizes so it would have to be one freaky coincidence that they would almost all get much better colors at the same time after i started feeding NLS...

I also never said that i think food has more effect on the polypterus than the environment, by the way you are responding to my comments it looks like you thought i meant that... i was simply saying it helps, which you didnt aggree on:

Color enhancer food don't really effect bichirs. It's the environment that effects their color.

i was mostly responding to this comment:

no matter what food you give to your bichirs, they will still maintained their color, it genetics, and the color will only chance depending on the environment and the amount of light in the tank.

However it looks like we are on the same page now after you edited your last post to add this:

which is exactly what i meant... and in a good environment the color can get even better with the right diet

Placing a fish in all-white tank will typically cause a morphological color change within the chromatophore cells of the fish, hence color enhancing properties in the feed, or not, will make little to no difference in that type of set up.

In other words, what Andri said. :D

I really dont think that pellets would do much on color pigments, the only thing that would take affect is the growth of the fish since pellets would have a higher protein and nutrition that the fish needs.
Newly acquired bichirs would look rather pale, but once they settle in then you'll see their true color. This will also depends on the tank set up.
When I mentioned light could affect their color, its because bichirs prefers dim lights, ie. put two same species in two different tank, then set some light on in one tank, and no light in other, leave the two for sometimes, then you'll see the different.
this is just what I think,
cheers
