my jags had a nice pattern to them, now they are black . what would br the cause for the color change they r in my 90 with 2 O's , a salvini and a JD . the jags are 3 "

Normally the overall black color indicates stress. It sounds like they are getting picked on.

i dont see them get picked on much my salvini chases them a little, but not to the point it should cause them stress , they r active and eating well, so not sure but i will watch closer to see if there is a bully thanks !

real dark or black jags usually equals stress. or you could have 2 males or 2 females stressing each other out. do you have another tank to move the jags to temporary? find out if you have 2 of the same sex and if you do lose one of them. if they are male and female give them a chance to outgrow your other fish and then add them as they will be dominant

I have several species of fish that hide in caves, under driftwood and in crevices that are totally void of light. They will darken themselves to blend in with their surroundings and are under no stress at all, so its not a 100% guarantee that its stress. If they come out of hiding and are dark, Id write it off as that. My grammodes, which are the tank kings, do the same thing and no one messes with them.

my jags were quite dark until about 3 inches, then coloured up beautifully... although you say they were a good colour before... my guess would be stress...

it was stress ,now that they r in the 30 they r getting their pattern back if i keep them i'll have to wait till they r bigger to put them in the big tank hopefull i will have a 125 or a 180 by then .

glad you noticed and worked it out before they lost their health... you have a sharp eye...

my substrate is black so my jag was black...until recently. at 5 inches, shes a beautiful black and tan. stress is still a possibility but maybe not. if u dont rehome them soon however they may get stressed out, or become the stressers

I recently bought a 1 1/2" jag from petsmart that was the tank boss. All the other jags were stressed and black colored while the one I took home was light. After it was introduced to it's new home it darkened right up. It's the second smallest fish in a community tank of juvie cichlids and it doesn't get messed with much. It has regained it's normal color pattern. 90% of the time cichlids do this is because of stress.
