Colorful bluegill Id with picture

Hey MFK. My buddy caught this fish sunday and I was curious if anyone could give me a positive Id. I told him I thought it might be a pumpkinseed but I wasn't sure. I'm pissed, I should have kept it for my tank, but we just showed up to this new spot and it was a twenty minute drive. Lose lose situation. Neat fish either way. And dude, the Flyers trade Gagne for who? Eh!

Is it rare? Definitely the first one ive seen, but it was a new spot. Should I expect more or just get bent that I didn't keep it?

Thats a pumpkin seed? Dang it that means what I thought was a bluegill/green sunny hybrid was a pumpkin seed! They killed off that pond to!! >_<

Southeast. This ones from French Creek, Hopewell Lake. Nice lake, I may go back this weekend if it's not hell on earth hot out again. Apparently they have all the pickerel species within the lake and i'd like to pick one of them off. Any recommendations for those guys lure wise? Shiny topwater stuff would be my guess.

They seem pretty common up north, i catch them by the hundreds here in western new york on worms, but it all depends on the spot, theyre supposed to be in FL but ive only caught one my whole life there
