What are some different colorful species that would be compatible with CL's? Preferably mid to surface swimmers.

Lots. Anything that has similar water preferences and isn't overly aggressive.
A classic combo is tiger barbs with clown loaches.

More details. I have a 90G, with a Fluval 104 and 404, Hydro V sponge and a Koralia Evolutions 1050. Looking more for different colors as opposed to matching their patterns with Tiger Barbs. Would a BG Jack Dempsy fit in their? How about Discus?

The only problem with having a jack dempsey is your loaches will more than likely be less active around the tank due to its agression. Same problem with my tank when I had my oscar in with my loaches. He wasn't particularly violent towards them but they were wary of his presence. As soon as he was out of the tank BOOM they were swimming all over! A 90 with that filtration should be fine for discus. Just know that discus are very touchy when it comes to water peramiters, so you will have to be willing to be diligent with water changes. And as far as colors go discus are as numerously colored as a rainbow! Good luck!

I have had Clown Loaches in with aggressive Cichlids with success. The Cichlids pretty much ignored them. However, that was in a 125. With a smaller footprint like your 90, you could be more likely to run into problems.

What about a bunch of Rainbow Fish?

I am starting to lean towards a pair of Discus. Anyone think the current from the powerhead will be an issue?

I would personally go with a more peaceful SA Cichlid and some sort of decent sized tetra or barb for dithers. Severums are great.
Although, I can't really talk because my clowns are temporarily sharing a tank with some growing argentea. ;)
