Colorful dithers for cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats nice. So did I. Until one day they all were eaten.

You also have to remember that might not work for some may work for others. The OP asked for suggestions. You speak in absolutes (from your previous post) "tiger barbs and filament barbs won't work". In fishkeeping, for the most part there are no absolutes.

Thats true and I shouldn't have said that. However, if there is a possibility of the fish not working together that should be at least mentioned.

And I can totally agree with you on this!!! Sorry to hear of your misfortune with the filament barbs. I love mine...I have two male and four female. They were pretty boring when little but as they grew their colors and activity really increased.

Ya, I'm going to look at the following this weekend:
Festae
Green Terror
Some kind of pleco (sailfins and fancies)
Tiger Barbs
Rosy Barbs
Loaches (probably Clowns and YoYos)

I would suggest a few different fish...

-A school (7+) of larger tiger barbs (have them with my texas - he hunted and killed my giant danios but has no issues with these guys)
-Red hooks (if you have the space)
-Bosemani rainbows (at least 6)
-Buenos aires tetras perhaps? They get pretty sizable when full grown

I have these barbs in my 190 and they work really well as dithers. Very pretty fish. Mine are about 5". They are housed with a 8" Location X Umbee, large green snooks, F1 Peru Oscar, large Grammodes and a large pantostictus. All get along well.

I also had a group of large Buenos Aires tetras that did quite well with my less aggressive CA's. Also have a current group of HRP's that do quite well as dithers.

I would definatley skip the jewel cichlids. If you end up with a breeding pair they can be quite dangerious...even to the larger fish. I would suggest filament barbs, they have bright red markings on their tails and as they get older end up with a rainbow sheen to their silver scales. Very active and friendly fish.

and a pic

I had snakeskin gourami's a group of 6, they all survived to be about 8" long and were great dithers. infact the LFS near my old house had a 16" jag with yellow and blue gourami' as dithers and they were fine.

alternatively think about Kissing gourami? they like groups tehy swim fast, are pinky coloured and have a more cichlidlike personality

I can't speak about Festae but if you go with a GT form a small size a school of roselines or Mollies would work. Start with a small GTs and let it grow up with them I've had Mollies with mine for over a year now with no trouble what so ever. My GT is about 9" and doesn't give them a second look. However and adult with these fish being added to their tank would be a different story.

Well I went today and picked up a gorgeous 2.5 inch flowerhorn (who came in to the store 4 weeks ago at 1/2 inch long along with all the other flowerhorns, but they are all still that size lol) and a 2.5 inch crenicichla (I think it's a Crenicichla cincta). Hopefully go pick up some tiger barbs and some rosy barbs tomorrow. All in all not a bad purchase at $11 dollars (I'm pretty good friends with one of the LFS owners near me).
