When you cut the holes in the sides of the tank, simply use wood clamps through the hole and pieces of 2x4 to cover more area (clamp the 2x4 pieces). No need to stand the tanks on end. Also, if you use the thicker weld-on it should seal well.

There is another possible way to link to giant 300 plus gallon tanks and that is to build a modular water bridge. There is a project I'm getting ready to work on where I'm going to build a 30 gallon long aquarium that will act as a water trough between to big fish tanks. http://www.deviantart.com/art/The-Fish-tank-highway-system-420602781 The water trough will be built at the water level of the two fish tanks and it will have two PVC pipes drilled into the sides of the tanks and two PVC pipe fittings form the tanks to tie into the water bridge. The idea would also have the benefits of allowing the system to be taken part if the tanks needed to be moved to a new house.
