you could always go for the smaller cichlids to fit more in, so you get more of a mbuna aspect, fish such as firemouths salvini's etc. and those are usually the first american cichlids people get into, they tend to be forgiving about overstocking and water parametres, however if youre looking for a big personable pair there are some Vieja species that grow a little smaller than Synspilum, just have to be careful that you pick the less aggressive species.
I'm sure if you brought them small then they would be fine in the tank as they grow up and get used to each other.

would you be buying a group to get a pair? or just hope you get male and female?

if you want a nice pair for that size tank i would do a pair of carpintis escondido or vontehillo (vontehillo are my personal favorite) the blues on these fish are just unreal and most pictures you see do not do them justice, their colors are really hard to capture in a pic and they have good personality to boot :)

The group of Synspilum i'm looking at are all around 3'. I was going to buy 4ish and try to get some on both side of the 3' mark to try and get at least a male and female. But it sounds like due to size I will have to re-think that. Which is fine, their are pleanty of other good looking fish out here to choose from.

TO be fair, the to the mbuna. They are not really going away, just down sizing some. I'll still have a 75 full of them, they just won't get the 110.
