comments - stocking level/tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Let's try and not make this into another back and fourth between a few members and Convict Breeder. I avoid CB's threads to avoid that arguing and the last thing anyone wants to see is this spilling into other threads.

Paullywolly can choose to follow or ignore anyone's advice on MFK.

I'd only house a Datnoid if it was going to be alone in the tank. You can certainly fit a couple more fish in there, but I don't think going with something that won't work long term is your best option.

Have you considered a couple more Severum or maybe even some Geophagus?

Edit: Dithers are also a waste of time with a Pike and a GT, Silver Dollars would work but they grow too big for my liking.

Dat is not going to work long term. Your 75 is a good GO for him.

ummm not if your 30 gallon has 2 jds 2 firemouths a pleco and a con.... oh and didnt you say you wanted a EBJD????

It's a 29 gallon and you forgot about the 2 African Eyebiters, the bichir, and the 2 kholio loaches in addition to the 2 JD's, 2 Firemouths, a Pleco and Convict. Oh and I think there's a frog in the tank too.

C_B, you should take those out of your signature. When we have visitors to MFK, they look at your stocklist and think that's what all MFK'ers are about.

Back on track, Dat's take a long time to grow so it would prolly work for some time. None of the tankmates are super aggressive either and are still small so that's why I think it would be ok. Eventually you may have to sell some fish or upgrade tanks, I prefer the latter.

JUST SAY NO TO DATS HOMIE!!! You have a really nice sounding SA lineup goin on as of now, dont screw it up with some trendy aisian fish. Dats are so yesterday. I say add a caquetia myersi to the mix. They look a little bit like a dat but are a killer SA cichlid. And hardly anyone has them!! Then you can join the c. myersi GANG that Im gonna start here in a week or so. (jk). No club for c. myersi, we a GANG.

I'd get another severum, possibly a gold to mix it up.

OT: I thought I got badgered for having a lone RD in a 37gal....wow.

Thanks guys for the advice. Robmcd, you think Dat's are trendy?? oh noes! lol..

Well me being impulsive, I went ahead and bought the Dat last night on the way home.. When I got him home I realized that he just MIGHT be big enough to eat my pike. so after a few hours of worriedly watching him in the tank, I decided better safe than sorry and outfitted his own 20g holding tank (previously housing feeders... which are all in the dat's belly now lol).

My plan is to either (a) hold him in the 20g for a few weeks til the pike grows some more, (b) get him his own tank, or (c) return him from whence he came! In the meantime, I'm going to scour the Datnoid forum for info.

I will post pics of the SA tank by the way, I'm really happy with it... got some alumni event tonight, so will have to happen on the weekend.

Yes; I have a 125g planted community tank that will slowly be converted over the next year or so to house my pike, Severum and possibly this dat, along with some others TBD. I'm also planning / hoping / working on my wife to get a 150+g at some point (hope springs eternal). :P
