Common, Diamond, High Back Rombeus - How do you determine the difference?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
imo there is no such thing as a 'common rhom'. colouration depends entirely on collection point. diamonds are as the name suggests, they have shimmery scales on the flanks. high backs are also as the name suggests, they grow very high backs/shoulders compared to other rhoms..... thats it really

As juviniles under 5" most varinets will still have there spoting and such and will be very hard to judge correctly. how big is your fish?

variation in visual markings depends on origin of the fish. high back's come from venenzula "Venny" or "Vinny". these also get a very nice blue sheen.

by common i guess you'd be refering to Peru rhombeus?

diamonds are easily id'd when at adult size. the intense sheen is not seen on any other sorts of rhombeus. Gold/Blue/Black.

look at a picture of a black peru rhom, then look at my xingu in my avatar.... surely you can see the difference?

your xingu looks lighter almost white i really like it im thinking of either an elongatus or xingu for my next p.

yeah he is almost white and in the right light (not in that pic) he is pearl white with shiny silver specs all over him, it really makes the eyes stand out even more.
xingus generally have a slightly different body shape to 'other rhoms' plus their eyes are a deeper blood red and stand out more plus their lower jaw usually jutts out just that bit more imo
great fish... mine took about 2 months to fully settle into his tank, during that time i moved him 3 times aswell tho, but now he is completely settled and getting VERY aggressive towards me and other people

this is a good pic of what he looks like in the 'right light'

thats the pic that made me want a rhom in the first place... look at those eyes

Attached a picture of my rhom as requested. He's around 6 to 7 inches and is settling very well in his 75 gal tank. Had him for almost a week.

Please identify what kind he is. He seems to look like the avatar of RonTheRHOM.

Thanks guys! /Users/Dudong/Desktop/10062008541.jpg
