Common (northern) map turtle?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here are some pics of the map turtle. A little smaller than he thought, only a 6" carapace, but still a nice looking little turtle. VERY active right off the bat, very alert.

Great looking turtle. One thing about keeping them in tank is that you can enjoy looking at them and watching them eat.

Outside they seem skittish . When you do put him/her outside consider getting more they will breed .

I'll be adding more turtles to the pond over time. I hope to add some more painted, some sliders, and maybe a few mud turtles as well. Or maybe I'll keep the muds indoors...

A few more pics. He demolished some market shrimp and krill, and is currently chasing 2 feeder comets around the tank. (S)he's got a hefty appetite so far.

I already love having this turtle, and I'm glad I got it. It really seems to like the new tank. The previous owner had it in an opaque plastic tote, with an internal power filter that wasn't working, and the water was a pea-soup green. It only had one rock, which barely broke the surface.

Yeah, she's a lady, but she ain't a northern map! She's a false map (G. p. pseudogeographica).
You beat me to it:D However Im a bit conserned about her size, though it was bigger. A very nasty acident that happens sometimes with this kind of combos its the bigger turtle ripping the head of the smaller when they both head for the same peace of food. Spinys are relatively peacefull in the softys world but they wont think twice about doing that. Is there any chance you could grow her in that tank insted of putting her straingh away in the pond?

Huh, a false map? Oh well, at least its still native to the area. I figured it was a female, just wanted confirmation.

It's going to take a good month before the pond is ready, at least, especially with me getting ready to build a new deck myself as well. I have no problem keeping her in the 29g to put some more size on her, if it will help keep her getting hurt/killed.
