I had good luck with a pair, 14" inch male and 20" female, in a 2000 gallon pond but I think the only reason that worked was because they had tons of room.

Thats an awesome set up for a pair of snappers. Did they breed at all? I've never bred them before but I have kept a couple. They are very common around where I live. One of the most common turtles seen in the waterways in my area.

Yes, they bred but unfortunately someone stole my female before she laid. Not 10 days after I put them outside she went missing and there was no way for her to escape so I'm assuming it was one of the neighborhood kids that knew they were there :irked:

Oh man, that really sucks. That would piss me off to no end if someone did that to one my box turtles. I used to live in the country so I didn't really have to worry about that kind of thing. But now that I bought a house in a development, I'm careful who I talk to about my turtles.

well I tried mixing....but did not like the tense excitement of the big one gazing fixedly at the small one's neck...and slowly approaching...

did not wait to see.....

Yeah, you have to watch out with snappers. One aggressive bite could be fatal to the other snapper. Thats why I believe if your going to mix turtles, make sure that they are all about the same size.

hehe i think you did the right thing... why risk it?

:) we're not keeping animals for years, for nothing...:)

I forgot to mention this, they have two ally snappers in a HUGE, maybe 6,000 gallons, tank at Lowry Park Zoo. I never see them even move let alone bother each other and they are some of the biggest allys i've ever see. Probably around 120 lbs plus. I think allys would be a safer mix than common snappers due to different hunting technique. Still wouldn't try it personally though.

My ally snappare is, and will be, alone....

as is my matamata....
