Common Snapping Turtle

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
[/SIZEHe looks so much like my guy...mine is 3 years and about 7 inches across.. i got him the same way when he was quarter size.. i am glad he has such a beautiful home.. we are thinking of doing the same type of pond for ours in the spring] is yours the same species as mine in ny?

After seeing the post of Liz's turtle (Yes, I think they are both Chelydra serpentina, the Common Snapping Turtle) I went and measured Snappy. His shell is 8 1/2" wide by 10" long.

!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????? WHAT???!!! 7" after 4 years?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Mine grew to 7" after 8 months. I got them as hatchlings. They grew FAST and ate everything. They were tearing up my 125G like it was a goldfish bowl.

These were taken at about the 4 month mark. I am 99% sure they mine were florida commons.

Well he did say it was kept in a "goldfish bowl". A small tank like that would stunt it's growth.

And I think yours is a Florida too, it's got the pointed tubercles on the neck and throat.

first pix looks Osceola.

Love those guys.

Liz's is a common serpentina.

So you think mine ("Snappy") is an Osceola? What is the difference? I knew he wasn't an Alligator Snapper and the best I.D. I could come up with was Chelydra serpentina...

Thanks for the input!
