I have always wanted a wolfish. Ideally I want a rainbow/red fin wolfish but can only find the common ones.
Are they just too aggressive to be kept with others or are they just an aggressive eater bottom dwelling fish?
I'd like to keep one in my 180 gallon. It would be kept with silver dollars, jack Dempsey, armored catfish (niger and irwini), ornate and albino Senegal bichir, and a severum.
What can I do to raise a docile one?

Can’t raise a docile one. Gotta get one small and let it grow up with other fish and hope it’ll get along. Just need larger tankamtes with common wolves.

The silver dollars, albino Senegalus, jd, and severum will be at risk with a common wolf.

Would really just try and wait for a red wolf if these tankmates are permanent.

Never kept a common Wolfish but agree with kno4te kno4te that a smaller Ery species such as a Red or Purple Wolfish may work with your stock.

I've kept everything but a Severum and the big cats with a common wolf. I kept smaller striped rapps though. Didn't have any issues. I did get them all around the same size and started with them small. I'd say just get the JD a little bigger is all because their growth rate won't keep up very much.

Now as stated it does depend on the specific specimen, but ime majority of the time it'll work. Main fish I'd worry for are the SD. Never had a common bother them but one bite is all it takes.

Would a 5-6'' one be a good small size to start?

Depends on the tankmates. How big are they gonna be. How big is the tank etc. will dictate what's good for you.

Tankmates would be 7 clown loaches about 3-4''. black bar (wide) silver dollars, endli bichir, ornate bichir, and senegal bichir, silver arowana, and the armored cats. 180 gallons.
I might wait and do a trio of red wolfs.

I wouldn't suggest it until everyone else has grown to a 6-8"
