community 40g stock list

Odessa barbs are gorgeous but I find them less hardy and shorter lived. It could be my water but all my females have bloated up and died one at a time. I started with two dozen and now have nine males over the course of four years

Never heard of odessa...intrigues me lol my wife now wants shell dwellers so thanks kewpie ha

Edit..i have 2 aquaclear 50g and a double headed sponge. Switching to a homemade 5gal bucket canister soon though

40g would be perfect for shell dwellers

What's your pH and hardness? The dwarf cichlids generally like neutral or lower pH, and softer water, where I think the shell dwellers are the opposite. But maybe the shellies can tolerate a wider range. I'm not super familiar with them.

Yes, good point the shell dwellers are from Lake Tanganyika and will require a high pH~8.0

You could also do a barb/asian tank. I had a beautiful tank filled with Odessa, Roseline, and some other barbs. The Roselines would be a little too big but Odessa, Panda, Tiger, and maybe some Garra would be really cool.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but I'm in the process of setting up a 125 gallon tank with Odessa barbs, clown barbs, Dawkinsia rohani, Dawkinsia assimilis, Dawkinsia filamentosa. We're also putting a fairly large school of panda garra in for the botttom inhabitants.

That sounds awesome, there's something really appealing about a large collection of smaller fish in a big tank.

My ph is actually 8.0 out of the tap. Im on well water coming from my landlords farm. Still cant decide on shell dwelling cichlids or a big planted tank...

Hmmmm... well with that pH maybe you could do some locally raised apistos or bolivian rams? What is available in your LFS? I don't think you'd want to go with anything shipped or wild caught. (For dwarf cichlids) I'd think that anything captive bred from your LFS would already be acclimated to the pH.
