I am in the process of setting up a 125 gallon community cichlid tank. Of the two who would do better in a community, my 6 inch red devil or my breeding pair of jack dempseys?

Lol. A large aggressive breeding pair or a large psycho.... Neither are suitable for community settings imo.

I would say neither also, but I have managed to keep a RD in a community, I have never managed to keep a breeding pair of fish in a community setting without having some problems.
Some of this depends on the sizes of all the fish and their individual temperament.
I guess the vague unhelpful answer is just try it and keep an eye on them if it doesn't work out pull the bullying fish. Lol

IME cichlid communities are best when SA cichlids are used the majority of CA cichlids do not lend themselves to community settings (in most tanks) the exception would be extreamly large tanks or overstocked tanks where none of the fish can establish a terratory.

I was going to ask what other fish you had in there now. This setup can work but as mentioned earlier have the tank crowded. Then put on as much filtration as you can and even a powerhead. Put in lots of hiding places and I would say go with the Jacks. We have a 150 cichlid show tank that has Africans,CA,SA, as well as plecos clown loaches and cat fish for the most part the tank remains calm. It is a great tank to sit and watch. Also it should be mentioned that if there are Central Americans in there they will pair up with any thing. Good luck you should end up with a super tank.

Wild Bill your tank sounds great. I dont have anything in the 125 yet. I have the jacks and RD seperated in a 60 gal until I figure out what to do with the 125 .
