Comparable or not ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the feedback guys....last thing I want is a blood bath on my hands and also don't want to over crowd or stress anyone out. The unfortunate reAlity of the hobby is your always going to upgrade lol. I will wait until I have the adequate accommodations.

I appreciate the feedback

On a side note I live in the Chicagoland area is there a way to narrow that search for the buy sell threads
Don't know about the mfk classifieds but the classifieds on gcca.net are great an membership is not required to use them.

Nice healthy looking Os! I too would greatly reduce the depth of that substrate. 2 oscars alone in a 4ft tank are going to produce a big nitrate creep over the course of a week anyway. I'd leave the stocking as is like said above.

If you are in the Chicago area, you should check out the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association (gcca.net).
There are some great and knowledgeable people club, that breed and sell many (what might be considered) very rare species. They have mini auctions at all there meetings, swap meets, and a couple mega auctions twice per year.
I received 4 adult Paratilapia small spot from one of the members, and many other species over the years.

How would you guys handle that sand? For sure it looks like it hasn't been disturbed recently. Does he remove the fish and then churn and remove sand?

Tank started out as attempt at a planted...the color variance you see on the substrate is black Eco complete...red Eco complete layered on top of soil( the black is not detritus built up).....I surrounded the soil with sand roughly 1inch on the outside. Needless to say it is no longer a planted tank I have a lone sword and a few Java fern. With that said how would I remove that large of an amount of substrate. I do not have another tank setup to house the fish. I would suspect that once disturbed the tank would go black when the soil is disturbed. I conduct water changes twice per week on this tank. Ph and nitrate levels are checked before each water change is conducted as well. My ph stays between 6.8-7.0 and nitrate never higher than 5 ppm. I use an Api test kit. Are there other underlying issues that can arise from this setup long term? It would be a huge undertaking to redo the substrate

Dude I don't know. With that deep and dirty of sand/soil and those large fish in that small of a tank I definitely wouldn't add more fish and I would go as far to say either look for a new home for those fish or upgrade asap. I don't want to sounds like a complete jerk but I kinda feel bad for those fish. If they are 8 inches and the tank is only 48 inches long and they have to split the space take away the 16 inches of fish away that make 32 inches with two fish make only 16 inches per fish of territory imo not enough space.

As far as it being a planted tank in the past maybe plant some more plants and add some neon tetras or a betta or maybe saltwater is calling for you back, but then again a shark or 10 foot eel may be added to that tank

I always encourage constructive criticism...thanks for the feedback...Stay tuned for the next post when I ask how long a red tail can live a 40 breeder.

If you have anything else of substance to contribute please feel free to continue posting I'm sure I'm not the only person to find your ignorance refreshing.

Cheers

Not a bad looking tank though. I think you're prob fine with the two Oscars size wise. However the bio load will be quite a struggle my advise would be minimal substrate minimal decor to increase flow and as much filtration as you can get and most likely biweekly water changes. If they get along and you can keep water parameters in check youre good. To add anything else would complicate matters and increase upkeep exponentially
