Hello MFK,

I have a 1 ft Silver Arowana in a 180 gal tank. I am considering adding a few more fish (a bottom dweller and a middle-level swimmer)

My favorite options are:

1. A pair of Gars: The ones easily available (at a reasonable price) are only 3-4 inches in length. I am considering getting a pair of them

2. A pair of Tiger Shovelnose Catfish: The only ones available are about 3-4 inches in length.

My Silver has never had "feeders". And I once "tested" my Arowana by adding a 3 inch gold-fish to his tank (to check if he attacks or tries to eat it.) It didn't.

I know Catfish (and Gars) have legendary growth rates, but when they start out at the size mentioned above (3-4 inch) will they ever catch up with the Silver Arowana?

Is it safe to introduce the above mentioned fish in my Arowana tank?

Please advice.

Sid

Are you ever planning to upgrade? If not I would not put any other monsters in the tank with the aro. In less then a year you silver aro will be, in my opinion, too big for a 180g tank. So it will need all the swim room possible in the tank, plus without any other monster tank mates the chance of it freaking out will be greatly reduced.

Well, the tank looks pretty empty with just the one (1ft) Silver Arowana swimming near the surface.

Do you recommend any other bottom/middle-level swimmers? Some pleco maybe?

discus, or other non-agressive fish

I live in Bombay (India) and discus are a bit too delicate for the temperature and water-conditions here.

(Also, I am more interested in monsters than dainty fish.)

I don't think I can keep anything larger than a 180 gal in my condo. (I already have a 70 gal tank (4ft) and another 50 gal tank.)

Once the 6ftx2ftx2ft tank seem to be small for my Arowana, I will consider releasing it in a well in my farmhouse in the country. (It is isolated from the local water-bodies and has some assorted native fish). (It already has a couple of monster (2.5-3 ft) albino ID sharks (Pangasius hypophthalmus) and some large pleco my cousin released there.)

Can someone answer my original question about comparative growth rates of these fish?

Thank you,
Sid

i think the TSN will still be able to out grow it, if its anything like a RTC.

Once the silver hit around 16+'' the growth is pretty slow,

No that's not true. Silver aros average growth of 1-1.5" per month continues up to the 24-25" range. So sidrock figure a year at the most and your silver will be over 24". At that point, if like most other silver aros it will only grow 1-2" per year.

As for the growth of the other fish, I really don't know, heard that the RTC is similar growth rate to silver aros.

I think it would be fine, but it depends on how fast your arowana grows and how big it is now. It just depends on how long you plan to keep each fish.

Be very careful with rtc. Those guys are vry notorious and may cause head ache in the long run.
