Comparison of sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes its different grain size, Pfs is generally much heavier. I've heard to many horror stories of play sand, but if it works then good!

Pool filter sand is heavy enough that after it is backwashed, and stirred up in a pool filter, it quickly falls back into place. This is what you want it to do, while being vacuumed.
And is one of the reasons it is recommended for aquariums, it will not stay suspended in the water column, and as F1 stated, tend to ruin impellers or filters. Impellers can easily be scored by small particles causing expensive damage.

I had some fine aragonite sand in the tank and sump this pump/impeller was in, as you can see, it has pitted and the skin of the impeller came off in sheets, and ruined the pump/impeller inside casing.
Another plus is, pool filter sand is also basically inert and will not alter water chemistry.

Looks like I'm going to go pool supply shopping in the A.M. tomorrow...I wish it came in black for my Festae but I like how it looks anyway

I was under the impression the only color it came in is what F1's pictures have...

Yes I've only seen it in tan, but maybe other shops have different colors, its used to filter pools so u never see it for that application anyways.

Well, I live in Colorado so we don't have a surplus of pool supplies...on my 3rd store I finally found some. It's 20 grade, tan, looks pretty nice. Can't wait to get home and clean it up and drop it in. Will post pics later.

So I rinsed 4 times, dumped it into the tank, decorated and transfered fish. Needless to say my fish are loving it and so far I'm impressed with being able to fill a 55 gallon with substrate for $13...I have pics and a video of everything, will post later on today when I get home...

+1 for Pool Filter Sand
