Is this a good/bad/ok combination for my new 240 Gal. 8x2x2 :

1 Green Terror - 3.5"
1 Red Devil - 3.0"
4 Firemouths - 3.0 - 3.5"
2 Texas - 3.5"

There will also be other fish like 2 x 14 " perruno cats (don't pose any threat), 4 x 8-9 gars (only eat packaged foods) and 1 x 10" ornate bichir.

I feel the RD may cause trouble for the rest as it grows the fastest and the one I have in particular right one is pretty active.

So what do u guys think ? Is the tank big enough for these guys to be one big happy family or not ? Do I need to add more of any one or remove any of the above CA/SA cichlids ?

Also, should I add oscars at a later stage ?

the midas may cause havock, i would have thought it should be fine because of the size and aslong as u put alot of spaces to hide, id say it should be ok.

if i was you, id rethink it personally, you could have a way better stock in the tank!

I'd try to avoid the Texas being a pair, but otherwise it seems like a decent list, with the exception of having a super-aggressive midas for example

im just saying this, your gars and birchir would be able to eat any of those, and i no that they take package food but i bet if they got hungry one day, i wouldnt doubt it if one tryed and/or ate one of the smaller cichlids. just the way i feel

thanks for the help guys. I'm thinking maybe I should keep Firemouths and the GT in my 55 gal. Texas maybe ok with RD. Lets see.

LOL. May happen, may not happen ! But you're right I can't wait and find out. Once these guys grow bigger than 14-15" they will surely pose a serious threat to anything smaller than 6 inches.

fire mouth and green terror would be better in the 55g. I agree with the hubby two female texas would be better. two males would be ok but a pair at breeding time...watch out. the midas will also be mean as heck but u can try and see what happens

i have a 14" florida gar that eats 4" goldfish but has never bothered 2" convicts. that being said it is a bad idea to mix gar with cichlids. they spook easy and will wind up jumping, getting broken backs, or lose there fins. i would not be worried about the gar eating the cichlids, more the cichlids pestering the gar. mine happen to be in an 8x8 and i still have issues with the cichlids picking at the gar. (he was a rescue otherwise i wouldnt have a gar with my cichlids)

Hmmm, yup makes sense. I'm glad my gars are not skittish at all. whew. They're rather more inquisite / curious. Anyway, thanks all for the advice. I appreciate everyone's sharing their views.
