Hi,

I am contemplating keeping a payara (armatus i suppose).

From the various pics i have seen it look mean, however it seems like people sometimes keep it in community tanks with rays and ATFs.

I would like to keep one with 4-5 asian arowanas. Is there a risk that it will pound them? I need to know because even if there a slight chance i am not taking it. Payara would be smaller than aros.

What about with motoros?

unitl the armatus got some size I would wory about the aro's killing him.

Ahhhh, so there is a possibility down the road that when armatus attains certain size then he can (may) wipe out the aro community?

Anyone else? Success/fail stories to share please?

I had a small silver aro in with my Tats who were much larger. The aro grew faster and was snatching the food away from the tats! In the end I could see the aro having the tats so I gave it to a mate. Just as well as it is now twice the size of my tats!

Thanks for the input. Aren't TATs supposed to be fairly small in terms of max. size? In any case, it seems that hydrolycus is not so fierse during feeding times after all. I imagine those canines make them rather slow?

What about Armatus, anyone?

might get ahold of DB chaser. he has some armatus that he keeps in a somewhat aggresive(powder keg) community.

mikolai got a big armatus that is keeping in a community tank with large peacock bass and datnoid

nvm he lost his armatus 2 weeks ago >.>;;;

It will be just fine with all species of rays..... AS long as the Armatus will NOT fit under any ray's disk. I just lost an Armatus to a ray. As far as the aros go.....I have NO experience with Armatus and aros. I do however have experience keeping them with other smaller silvery fish (Odoe Pike, and Pink tailed Chelceus) If you feed live to your Armatus more than likely it will NOT work. If you break the Armatus onto dead food (mine prefer smelt over shrimp) then they can easily be kept in a community they normally would destroy.

Not fierce at feeding time??? Ha ha... My other fish learned very quickly who eats first.

Ok thanx, very interesting info. From the sound of it, it is a risky business. Although, it seems armatus can hold its ground (ray notwithstanding). Might have to try silver aro community rather than asian ... to reduce risk

rays will be fine.
different armatus have different personalities.
you might just get one thatll kill all those aros.
