Any fishes. FM's are demons when breeding.
Is that a "regularly" occurring thing or do the conditions have to be just right?

Don't add any fish. Once you upgrade them to a bigger tank you could consider tankmates.
Say, in a 30gal, would a convict be a good tankmate?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn. :nilly:

1" FM paired up? What.....
I was pretty surprised too. I didn't think there'd really be any issues so early on, but 2 of them chase one around the tank when it gets in their "area", but never go after each other. The one sits by itself on the opposite side of the tank..

Everyone is here to learn, no worries. IMO the behavior your watching is because you have very active cichlids in a small tank. If you remove the third (currently the weakest), odds are good the last two will focus on each other and you'll watch the pattern repeat itself over again. I doubt they have paired up to breed at that size. Everyone is suggesting you not add tankmates because of tank size (lack of potential territories) not species compatability. :)

Sounds good. Currently I've got a simple setup. I've just got a big piece of slate sitting on a small piece of slate and a larger piece of lace rock, so its just one cave there. I picked up a few more pieces of lace rock and am looking around for some small driftwood to help with the hiding spots. Do you think adding more rocks/caves would help with this?

And thanks to everyone that's replied to this thread. Its been a big help.

2 firemouths alone are going to outgrow that tank in just a matter of a couple months, I would look toward getting a larger tank before anything else, but IMPO firemouths are great fish, u will be happy with them

I have a 30 Gal in storage, but just have to wait til I move to set that one up. I'll be keeping my eyes out for a good deal on a 55gal to upgrade to after that.

I like them so far. They seem like pretty active fish, although they're still a bit timid and hiding a lot since they've only been in the tank for about 30 hours. They've been coming out more and more lately though, and ate earlier this evening. :)
