so my normally very level-headed (and gorgeous) fiance brought home a 4" (that's inches, right? jesus) jaguar cichlid for our 125. Now, I've made some pretty risky combos in my day (i've got a pearl gourami in with a green terror, jack dempsey, salvini, four sevs, etc) and that little guy is totally fine. In fact, the green terror (whose really the same size as he is) really likes to follow him around. that thing is petrified of everything, fake plants included.

so, now we have this jag in quarantine and i'm not sure exactly how this is going to go. I figure its worth a try because I do have a place to rehome him if need be. The moonlight and pearl goramis will be moved to another tank probably before the jag is added to this one. i've got clown loaches, geo. abalios, yoyo loaches, the sevs,(ONE is being rehomed) the JD, salvini, a RTS, the young GT, and a pleco.

so, is there virtually NO chance of this working? am i insane?

interesting sidenote: one of my abalios just hasn't grown. the JD who is about six inches is that guys protector. it's very strange.

since the jack is bigger and its already his tank he might try n punk your jag at first. the bigger the jag gets id be careful. they tend to be somewhat timmid when young. with size and the more comfy they get the more aggresive they become. how big is the salvini? id make sure you have rocks n caves for hiding places and line of sight breakers

remember nothing is perm! with age cichlids agression changes along with breeding and whatnot. i have a tank with a breeding pair of dovii, breeding pair of salvini, red texas, pike, jag, cuban, and a pleco. i watch closely but they have been together for a year. ill post pictures of the hiding spots though lol

the sevs and abalios especially would stand no chance if the jag decided to go after them. I'd say your chances of this mix working out is extremely slim. It could also lead to an overnight slaughtering of several of your favorite fish if the jag decides to just go nuts some night, which is known to happen with aggressive species like that. Everything will appear fine then one day you wake up to a lot of dead fish. So the problem is that the killing may come with no prior signs of trouble so ultimately it's your choice as to whether you want to take that chance.

As others have said, its a crapshoot and you stand the chance of waking up to some of your faves dead. Best bet would probably be to move the sevs and Gt to another tank and let the hierarchy establish itself between he, the salvini and the JD. Id almost be more worried about the salvini with the others. Mine were complete nightmares with fish 3-4x their size.

All said and done, in the long run, the jag will more than likely rule the tank once it becomes the largest...which will probably within the next 6-8 months.

salvini is 6.5 inches. i think it's a female, very red belly. we have tons of rocks and driftwood. a few fake plans. we are slowly doing that that long curvy branches and rocks thing. we will be upgrading our tank eventually, not sure when (no room in my APARTMENT) but 8 or 10 feet in the next five years. for now, i have places to put ANY fish that need to be seperated/hospitalized.

does anyone actually have EXPERIENCE with jags and any of these fish? growth rate?

Yes, i do, as well as hundreds on here.

With weekly 50% water changes and feeding a varied diet with a staple of fresh market shrimp, I got about an inch a month the first 8 months or so. Slows down after that.

Some on here have 14" jags...

Jags are extremly aggressive and very stubborn once they find a fish they can beat on they will be relentless, but i have also noticed that once they meet a fish that likes to beat on them they tend to hide alot and not eat(at least in my experience). If i were you i would just keep the Jd,Salvini and jag, just my 2 cents.
