Hi there, I'm new, and after setting up several tropical tanks with the usual community fish, I'd like to have an oddball tank. I am most interested in having one or two peacock eels, an African butterfly fish, and one or two of these "monster fish" as seen in this article: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/show_article.php?article_id=189

Can these fish all be kept together? From what I've read, the main challenge with keeping any of these fish is making sure they are fed, but if you can manage that, then they are all relatively easy to keep. Can these fish be kept in a 40 gallon (36x13x18 inches) tank?

i think you'll need something bigger than a 40 gallon

Can you elaborate? If I had one of each, the eel could get about 18", the monster fish about 6", and I honestly have no idea how large the butterfly fish can get, but I've never seen one larger than 6". How much space would they need? Could I even keep them all together in the first place?

The toadfish can eat fish about it's own size, the butterfly might be at risk as the ones you have seen are as big as they get, an 18" peacock will also eat suprisingly large fish. You might try a smaller spiney eel and maybe one of the banjo cats.
