I was thinking at minimum a 125 black belts male or female can be mean.

Theyll be fine my female blackbelt was 13 inches in a 150 with a saddled bichir , ornate bichir both over 20 inch a fire eel 22 inch and a tire track eel 22 inch with 9 other fish for 5 years , no deaths to fighting i could pet all my fish especially da eels they r attention hounds. But yeak i bought her at 2 inch all black with red tail crazy i know but by 4 inch she looked all blackbelt funny but yeah she was casual till 10 inch then was a cool queen alpha chick over my female dovi and red terror , but suprised she got to 13 ,,huge their not all length but height too, just was amazed ,,i love the alphas in the spawn ,biggest fry is not always male, her colors were odd as young other females dark grey not black males aare lightersilver to grey. But she was cool not aggressive but territorial a lil , i saw aggressive beasts so my definition of aggresive might b less than many , i always do large pvc pipes n my tanks so theres options for hiding, good luck, all yeah they eat meat n high protein foods but should keep them on veggie type foods for beauty n health, herbivore cichs have longer intestines ,it takes them longer to digest high protein foods plus my vieja were always darker becaus of this but grew large.

It will not work in a 75 long term. Both species can be nasty, trimacs especially. I would say even a 125 would be risky. I wouldn't try it in anything under a 180.

I would say at least a 120 but with a 125 or larger you could have tankmates other than dithers.

Biggers always better but just 2 fish in any tank needs something else to focus on unless paired or their mild. But those not that aggresive , its not like a grammode and a red tiger or a haitensis in there , thats relentless aggression ,it wont stop,, with just 2 they would need other focus, but could work 75, but yeah bigger the better , depend on the keeper too , me myself love to overcrowd but big tanks n overfiltrate too many spectators wow it . Started wit red snakeheads pikes and gars in early 90s .Liked the death fish, in 55 to 90 gal, young trial in error . First cichlid a strigatta pike he lived with a black rhom pirranah for a year plus it worked then sold both but in a 90 gal, not responsible on my end but worked ,now every where u read on net say it wont work, but in reality it did, but my fish i was the keeper they loved precooked shrimp earthworms and low ph easy pike 12 inch blk rhom 8 . Bigger is better , all fish have different character traits but 8 out of 10 he should see long life in those two.

I've had male trimacs kill their mates in a 125. They very much can be on the same level as the fish you mentioned. And they have nasty teeth behind the bite. Don't underestimate them.

Your right trimac and the whole amphilophus family are beasts up until 7 inches after they sexually matured then they calm down and become more managable cichs but just doubt he gets that phycho one out of 50 there man but within reason,of life as fish, im talking as there bought at same time 1.5 to 2.5 inch .Better luck with the introduction, n black belt larger of the 2. But trimacs are cool but do wild out when and around sexual maturity and a little after to me good fish, but of course their are always factors, and more important the keeper and the fish, goodluck all ,thank for fish talk good or bad loved it,,,,for real
