Just wondering how this would work with my bichirs. Fellow club member has a 7"+ Red Spotted Severum for a pretty good price and is going to be at the local fish auction this weekend so I'm considering picking it up from him for the 120g tank which is the poly tank. Other than the polys there's my 5" dat and a pair of 5" geos in there. Would the single severum give anyone issues ?

It should work but can't be certain because Cichlids are unpredictable.

generally severums are pretty peaceful. I've owned 3 and 2 of them have been very easy going. My female that passed recently was more tetra than cichlid. I never saw her get aggressive except when she was guarding eggs/fry. Very easy going. The first severum was a male rotkeil and he was similarly peaceful though could give chase here and there. My big male gold severum I have now is more the exception. He's quite testy and territorial. I tried to put him with the poly's and he harassed them quite heavily. I think your chances are better that it will work out than it won't. but you just never know with cichlids.

Should work. Just depends on the Severum. Friend had 4 red spotted sevs in with large and small bichirs.

Any fish that FREQUENTLY pushes bichirs while on the ground, or chases and bumps into bichirs when they go up for air will need to be rehomed.

My green severum has harassed my angelfish and nipped him and is generally an A hole to him. I think I just got an unusually aggressive one. In your case I'd add a few more hiding places like maybe a pvc pipe for the bichir. Maybe a larger one that the severum couldn't get into but the other fish could get into. Best to plan for the worst.

I think I might get him this weekend then. If by some off chance he turned out aggressive I could always plunk him into my tang or hap tank or something if need be. Would like to see how he does with the poly tank though for sure. He says he's a full 7"+ very healthy and totally covered with nice spots. $35 seems like a pretty decent price?

Yeah from what I've heard severums are one of the more peaceful cichlids, bichirs are very tough rugged fish, they have sharp spines and can breathe air so they can handle a lot of abuse, the datnoids and geos are the only real possible issue but with them being similar in size I don't think it would be too much of an issue, I'd be a bit more worried about the severum because the other fish have established territories and may defend it violently, be prepared to remove it in the event the severum becomes an issue

I was looking for a red spotted severum and the prices were like 50-60 for a baby. I would say that 35 is a very good price for him considering the fact that he is a red spotted severum and 7 inches.
