Once I buy a new desktop, I'm going to convert my old PC to a Unix based system. Then I will have PC races to see which is faster. Buster PC with Unix/Linux or new PC with Win7. I'll never get away from Windows 100% as I have a work computer and the wife is stubborn when it comes to updating to new technology.

Sometimes an old computer that is healthy and virus free can run better than a newer computer with tons of viruses, antivirus, firewalls, anti-malware, anti-spyware, adware, spyware, bloatware... all running at once

If you ran your Windows 7 computer reformatted with Ubuntu 10.04 or Linux Mint 7 It would run circles around your current set up. The OS is much less resource heavy. The GI looks more modern. Easier to maneuver. More customization. When I run a program, like the internet, I can run it alone without 5 other programs that keep me safe because I havent chosen windows (A dangerous operating system with many loop holes). Dont have to worry about keyloggers stealing all my account info. It's a opensource FREE operating system. Not helping out THE MAN. Linux is not new technology it is actually older than Windows.

As for the Wife being Stubborn, I think America on the most part is. Windows main strategy is to make people afraid to try something new. All the talk about how "User Friendly" they are... thats just a marketing pitch... Its the least user friendly out of Linux, Apple, Microsoft. Then you have the people like my mom that love their Android... because it cant get viruses and is simple to use... saying I hate my computer and wth is Linux? when little do they know Android is Linux!!! I set my mom up with Ubuntu (With Gnome2) on her computer and she now knows how to use it. Very simple, shes using the internet, downloading movies, music... SHE ACTUALLY WENT OUT AND BOUGHT A BRAND NEW COMPUTER SINCE SHE LIKED IT SO MUCH!!! Windows never even got to fire up once on that one...lmao

I'm pretty computer savvy and have studied information technology for a while including some college I.T. classes. I've used all the standard windows based os and I've briefly checked out linux. I have a friend that runs only linux and he's showed me a lot of it. I find Windows 7 to be one hell of an os compared to Vista or any of the previous windows os. I was very impressed when I started using it.

Of course it doesn't matter what os you are using if you are computer savvy enough to know what you're doing and take care of your computer. IMO linux isn't as easy as "bam hop on and you know how to do everything." Sure you're used to it if you use it so know how to access all of the same features of windows but a typical windows user is going to be lost if you go reformatt your hdd and install linux and leave the computer to them. Based on that, I really don't think it's too good of an idea. :/

Did you see Linux mint? This is much easier for even a child who has never seen a computer to jump on and right away know how to use it. There are MANY MANY MANY DISTROS! Ranging from Basic user to VERY COMPLEX... everything in between. Someone who needs the complex version wont need my help. For those not computer savvy Linux Mint will blow 7 out of the water. People without much Computer skills arent safe on Windows. Their privacy and info arent safe. They dont usually possess the knowledge to fix things when these viruses start mucking everything up either. Me, I know what I'm doing but I got tired of "Being careful what I download", Having Avast!, Commodo running nonstop and running iObit360 and Advanced System Care everyday. This is not a basic task IMO.

I do agree that 7 is the best Windows yet. Vista was a disaster. ME was a disaster. 98 was okay. 95 was a disaster.

I would have never tried Linux if SWIM's internet didnt go out, and SWIM wanted to run Aircrack to borrow someone who isn't SWIM's internet. After going on it a few times SWIM used Windows less unless until he deleted Windows.

Right on. No, I've not seen Mint and don't know anything about it. My judgement is based off the Ubuntu OS that my bud kept trying to force on me. Can't tell you what version but it was about 2 years ago so I'm sure it's older. I actually have a boot disc he made for me (like I said he was pushing it hard, lol) but I'm too lazy to pull that box down out of the closet to find it. :D

I agree people that are less knowledgeable on computers aren't very safe on Windows. I myself have no problems in the world with it and have no reason to want to change over. I can say though, I remember when I lived down south I was the go to guy to fix your damn computer and some of the friends whom I fixed their computers, I can remember them blowin' their computer up with malware and what not within like months of just reformatting the hdd and settin' the computer up fresh. It was ridiculous. So glad I moved up north cause that gets annoying after a while. Specially when it's the same person, same computer. Eventually I'd be like what in the world are you doing on your fricken' computer!? You have the same setup I have and I haven't ever had any problems! Lol... Yeah... And of course they'd be like "all I did was open my facebook" or something similarly ridiculous that wouldn't crash a computer as hard as they were doing.

EDIT: It was Ubuntu Ultimate Ed. I believe. Not sure what version if there are multiple.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHA MY Mom was the same way... every few months i would half to do that and then like 2 months later she would have it wrecked to the point it would hardly move...lol THEY ALL SAY, ALL I DID WAS OPEN UP FACEBOOK... same alibi... i just can't believe it! I just left Windows because I'm tired of watching what I do all the time, and what site I visit. Or if i want to download the newest movie. After awhile you will catch something and half to spend awhile fixing it. Id rather just get and do what i want, especially when there is no downside or anything i cant do on linux. 1 THING! I KNOW YOU ALL WILL CATCH ME IF I DONT MENTION. You cant watch Netflix on Linux as of now, BUT i think being able to download ANY MOVIE, TV SERIES, ALBUM, DISCOGRAPHY, without the fear of virus is worth the trade off. plus I have Netflix on my 360... that beautiful machine.

I gave up on Ubuntu after they had it out with Gnome. Gnome made ubuntu what it is and the new Unity set-up is second rate at best... utter garbage IMO. Ubuntu 10.04 is solid but is growing dated and will never be upgraded... all future updates point to Unity. Linux Mint is still pushing Gnome2 (like ubuntu 10.04) but with the new linux kernal. Fedora jumped right into Gnome3 but Linux Mint is waiting until it is more solid and user friendly bug free software.

Long story short if you like Android then you are already familiar with Linux.

Lol, yeah, that's always what they say! As far as people in your business I understand the concern. I run peerblock and have used it since peerguardian and have always been quite impressed with there program. I also have avast! running all the time which I noticed you mentioned for an antivirus program before. I've run kaspersky and all the other stuff but avast! really is a good program. As far as catching something through torrents, I am a member of a private site that filters everything before posting it so I don't have to worry about that. I guess it's just cautious. I know the regular computer user doesn't do all of this stuff I just mentioned. There like "but I payed the 70$ for the norton!"

Honestly the netflix wouldn't be an issue for me and I don't think it will be an issue for a lot of people shortly. Not sure if it's just my service provider but I believe they are starting to crack down on latency usage. I've always been under the impression only totally crap ISP use badwidth threshholds. Because that's the truth. No reputable cable/dsl company is going to use a bandwidth threshhold. Well, that's how it used to be anyhow. My Cox Communications provider just recently started canceling my service through the month. When I called to find out what happen they explained "I went over my limit" to which I replied "what fricken' limit!?" Anyhow, they explained they use bandwidth threshhold and most companies are going to start using them. They said they've had them in effect since 2009 but just never enforced them, which I believe to be true. Anyhow, the latency with all the downloads have been out of control lately so ISPs have been starting to enforce them. Long story short, my limit is 50gb for a month. Joke right? Three days of netflix and your over. Streaming music or video is still a temp. download which goes towards that. So they practically forced me to cancel my netflix, or of course "just upgrade your plan for more money you get more bandwidth." F that. What I think isn't right is that I purchased their service, have been using it for over 6 months for netflix and other things, they said I'd be fine using netflix and stuff when I got the service. Now they randomly just say "oh btw you've had a badwidth threshhold but we never enforced it but now we're starting to." I don't think that's right. Poor business. Anyhow, the point of the long story is that I had to cancel my netflix because I have to have the internet because I work online doing freelance work. When I canceled I explained to netflix that their service was great but my ISP is capping my bandwidth and they actually even have a little option saying that so I know they're loosing a lot of business over this now and definitely in the future.

I actually had a T-Mobile droid and I hated that damn thing. IMO it was the biggest waste of money I ever payed for which is why I canceled the plan and sold that thing on ebay, lol.

Yeah before i had Time Warner i was wireless tethering my computer off of my mytouch4g with CyanogenMod 7. I got the damn thing because it said unlimited internet, 4g. I guess im the sucker "american public" who didnt notice that it didnt say unlimited 4g internet. so after 5gigs they cut my from 8mbps to 1kbps sometimes .5 for the rest of the month... I complained, but they are right... they fooled me fair and square... fooled me into buying that POC. screen died on my thru a defect a couple weeks ago... its rooted and flashed so no warranty... they will get the ETF when they get it... Ill never sign another cell phone contract... this has nothing to do with Android or Linux though... Google did a great job... T-mobile screwed me. Some people get fooled into all those app killers and all that crap not knowing its linux not windows so app killers and batery saves make your phone run bad but dont do any benefit.
