Well, this sucks. Woke up to a dried-up female swordtail on the floor. Should’ve known this was coming and even bought mesh sheets for this purpose, to cover any gaps on the back of the tank. I was just looking for some kind of clear, strong tape to adhere that mesh to the glass lid. At this point though I’ll duct tape the damn tank to cover up all the gaps.
Bummer. You can also try using Saran plastic cling wrap. I cover the back parts of glass lids in the summer to reduce humidity with the stuff . Just drape enough over the back of the tank, over the glass and twist the edges. Never had a fish get past it yet.
So just about at the 2 week mark since I’ve noticed the fry. Just like last time, looks like they’ve halved the number of fry over the course of the first 2 weeks. Maybe it’s just much easier for them to manage. Nonetheless, doing great, I think these two have got this spawning routine down pat.
Solo’s been a bit moody. Total change of personality just like last time; from his usual passive state to “get the hell outta here” when I’m nearby lol. He swims around flaring his fins and gills, and will charge at me through the glass on occasional.
Leia has a much less drastic change in attitude. But that could just be because she’s already a little firecracker to begin with lol. I’ll try to get a video up by tonight.

All bark and no bite! LOL. This is what he does only when I come by the tank. But the second I put some pellets in or it's time for a water change it's right back to Mr. nice guy.
On a side note, I've noticed biofilm throughout the tank on the wood and decor. Happened last time too when they spawned. My guess is with the fry picking algae and stuff off the wood and decor they're exposing new surfaces. I know its totally harmless and bet the fry will even use it as a source of food, just interesting lol.

One of my favorite things about Amatitlania to be honest. They really resemble mini Amphilophus, and have the personality to match. I know FINWIN can attest to this, with those “mini chancho” HRPs

Unfortunately doesn’t seem like this spawn is going to make it, at least at the moment. Numbers are at all time low and I struggle to even find what’s left of the free swimming fry in the tank.
Leia’s colors have reverted back to her non breeding dress colors. Grey bars, yellow and blue fins. Gonna keep an eye on Solo, just to make sure he doesn’t turn on her again. At least until I can make the swap with Leia and the swordtails.
Speaking of which, the Otapa swords have been in qt almost 4 weeks. Ideally I’d have them in QT for a bit longer, going to try and hold out as long as possible. But if I have to make that switch early then I will.
