Con Solo the Convict

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Question: Is a rise in Solo’s aggression a cause for concern? It is now Leia who is being confined to the corner of the tank behind the filter intake by Solo. She has zero interest in him and seems only to want to get away. I’ve gotten used to it being the other way around so this is well… different.
Might need to separate very temporarily. He’s probably pissed about the fry being taken when they were both in full on raising fry mode and he’s taking it on her and/or he wants to breed again and she’s definitely not ready. Let him calm down and her recover.

Wow, I had no idea 😫. My fear was that their pair bond had been broken. I’m assuming removing her is my only option right now?
Yup seperate/remove. Pair bond isn’t looking great but it’s very salvageable they just had successful batch of fry. Try again soon. Only a minor error from the fishkeeper which happens. Trial and error. Can always differ from pair to pair anyway.

I could put her in the 29 again right now. How would she react with the fry already in there?
You could, in my experience with the same scenario the female clicked on her instincts and raised the fry to maturity on her own. Lived and ate with them as normal for months. So maybe give it a try and see what happens. Intervene if need be. This might be your best option.

Also feed her up to see if Leia puts on more size...it will possibly change the dynamic next time around. I've noticed how a lot of keepers will constantly breed females keeping them at a maximum size disadvantage. They stay stunted and small and the male gets huge. Pretty much all of my older female hrps have put on size after babies were stopped. Speck was named for her petite size but you'd never recognize that now. She's still not the biggest female (that honor goes to her mother Pip). Pip hasn't bred in a year and a half but she's just large anyway. Sisters of Speck (Flash, Xena) are also getting some size after the 'no more babies' rule.

Thankfully things have settled down with the two nut heads. Leia’s taking great care of the fry. I could be completely wrong, but it’s almost like there’s a sort of communication between her and fry. They were eating without her there, but now that’s she’s with them they are all grazing on things in the tank. Something they were not doing before. She’ll also bring them right there they need to be.

Solo’s back to the his normal colors for the most part. And back to being his former harmless self.
IMG_3095.jpegLearned a lot from this first go around with the breeding pair. Definitely some things to be corrected though for next time.
