No, actually that is quite slow. Mine hit 12 inch in a year. That is not "a little faster"..

Other then that the fish does look great.. is he still growing? Even if he only grows an inch every couple months then at least he is still getting bigger.

Fish grow at all different rates even when they're from the same batch of fry. When my fish breed, I always notice some of the fry will grow very quickly and be triple or quadruple the size of the slower growing ones. Some will even stay runts and not really grow at all.

How big when you got it a year ago? Looks good but might be a female

I got him @ 2" and was told 2.5-3 months old. No one could really confidently confirm it's sex yet.. i might have catch it and snapshot vent.

I find it hard to tell, because I look at it everyday. However, the back fin do have the clear white edge, like when u see with young oscars.. so yeh i think so.

Looks like a healthy fish to me. I've never seen a 17" synspilum before. I thought 12-14" was about as big as they get.

Yeh ur right, i got 17" from a website profile..it's wrong

you may not be feeding enough or wrong quality of food, just my two cents, mine never stop eating and are huge,
they love pea's, lettuce, fake crab(polask??), shrimp, pellets, feeders and worms, i always mix it up
I don't do beef heart because in my past experience it makes their color fade

Different fish different growth rates. 8" is a good sized fish. Your fish looks very healthy though.
My red devil/Midas is aroun 10" and he's about 2 years old. I thought he'd be bigger by now too but I guess not.
