I'm thinking of building a above-ground pond but it will be made out of concrete(rectangle shape)

but is concrete immediatley(after drying) safe with fish? or does it have to be left alone for a few years?

since i've seen people keep koi in concrete ponds but it has algae around the concrete and looks aged.

I made a concrete pond for my koi. It came out really rough so I recovered it with a sand, concrete and coloring mixture (and water). I let it soak for a month, changed the water, and addded my ugliest fish a few at a time. The ph stayed high for months. While I didnt lose any fish from the high ph immediately, I did lose a few to disease. I think that the high ph compromised their immune system. After two years all illnesses were gone and the population hasn't had anymore problems. If you want a concrete pond you should let it soak a long time, and stock species that like/tolerate a higher ph level.

You need to let the concrete cure. Your best to seal it too as the concrete will raise the pH to sometimes dangerously high levels.

I agree. I would seal it then add water. My dad's concrete pond had a leak because he put concrete around a rock and it leaked in that area, so he just resealed everything. Then when the water was in the pond, he added comets and plants, before adding his treasured koi's. Good luck!!!

thanks; when you say "seal" it what does it mean?

how long do you think it will take until i start building and finish making pond?
not too big, around 15' or so and 3'wide.
how long will it take until i can add fish in the completed pond? should i wait an year or so?

so one day the concerete wouldn't cause the water to get high pH correct?
but do you think koi can withstand really high pH?
