Concrete Tank Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
3/8" will be iffy at best, look for at least 1/2" or make 2 viewing ports.

Why the 1ft overlap?

Have you considered how you are going to mount the glass?

It will need to be gasket'd (look it up in Dr Joe's supplementary dictionary) in place with silicone to allow for differentials in contraction factors of materials.

Are you using reinforcing wire or rebar for the wall to bottom connection?

Are you framing/forming the entire box?

If your going to use the pre-mix idea (a good one since texture will be consistent) you have to have all your framing ready and only thing let to do is pour since the pre-mix started curing when they poured it in the cart.

Look in your area for "Construction Salvager's", they come in and strip buildings of anything recyclable before remodeling or demolition. I've found large 1/2" - 3/4" glass & acrylic windows and just missed a bunch of 1" acrylic from a check cashing place that was demo'd.

Keep everything in this thread so people don't get confused following it (and I don't have to do a cleanup ;)).

Good luck,

Dr Joe

ok cool thanks Dr Joe and yes i will keep my stuff in this thread :D....for the 1' overlap...i was short on money for a 8' long acrylic by 3' high one...plus i wanted to make the 6' long acrylic to be more secure within the concrete and one other thing it that i will be adding 2 layers of Aquarium Silicone around the whole acrylic from the interior of the tank and on the exterior. I was thinking of get some rebar but just thought i do the wire idea instead. And as for framing...im not sure...what do you think i should do for that part? And pre-mix is the one i will be going withl, and i'll look around for the Construction Salvager's thing too later :naughty: thanks for the info Dr Joe! :headbang2 i will be having 2 different Filters running in this tank...one filter is rated for 2,400 gallons but im unsure about the gph...i'll check when i go back to the store. And im looking around for any Rubbermaid tank over 100 gallon and convert it to a wet/dry system with a stationary holding box in it with the heaters attached to the wall of the Rubbermaid. I will also insulate the tank by having some insulation around the walls and on the bottom of the tank as this is going to be concrete and it gets cold out here in my area so i want all the heat to stay in the tank and not out of the tank.

ok still trying to find a 1/2" thick acrylic glass...and this will also be at most 2' off the ground by having a concrete stand so basically going to get more than 20x 80 lbs bags of concrete mix...im going to need more than 45 so 20 for the 4" wall and floor and for the stand...it would maybe need about 25-50 bags of 80 lbs for it...

To help figure out how much concrete you will need, split your tank into five sections (4 sides and the bottom). Figure out the demensions of each section and use the following tool to calculate the amount of concrete required.

Oh Ok thanks :D

ok its been a couple days to a week now and since they ive been moving over 800 lbs of furniture and tables and chairs...and well since out bill has gone higher i have to go smaller...=[ damn gov. making us pay alot more than we usually do >=0 i have to go with 8'x3'x3' its just a foot small at some ends. So i cleaned the floor and am going to make a DIY stand for it...it going to be from plywood and alot of 4x4's but on this stand it will have ALOT of legs to suppost this...the stand won't be too big in height, just big enough to hold the tank.

man thats tough since the concequences will be big if something happens. but since its really only 6' of glass mabey. cant you get acrilic. mabey you can do it in a way that tha glass fits into the concrete. i think that might help. iam building one my self but it is going to be 8' by 3 by 3 or 8' by 2 1/2 by 2 iam not sure got to see where it would fit. thats going to be the future home for my arows. look at this thread it might help. the guy just built a 10' by 4' by 4' he should be able to help. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126297

yea i know, i am going with acrylic and sticking with what im limited too...i can't try and beat the damn gov. 8'x3'x2' stands...=[ but hey atleast its better for my arowana and my fishes for having more swimming room with the 3' and the more lenght
