Conditions for Breeding

Thread talked some about temp. In the rays home land which is close to the equator water temp stays pretty consistent since the average daily temp stays about the same. The rainy season lasts so long that one would not think the water would change much in temp except maybe get a little warmer when levels drop. I agree with DB that it must be the lower tds of the water from all the rain that signals breeding. That would help explain why large water changes can spur breeding in some species of fish. You can try different things but most will tell you to let nature takes it course. I have tried various things in the past but leaving them alone has ended up working best

My temp stays about 78-80. Just put it there. I don't think the rays are like the cichlids with temp swing making a big difference. I agree with others with the fact that you need to wait for them to mature and give them space and clean water. And as fishdog says get a horny hung male.

I really appreciate the suggestions. I've been keeping rays for just under a year so am quite new to it all. I'm fascinated by them though and appreciate helping me understand them more.

there is hope yet brother, my 12 f motoro is carrying for the first time. My male is only about 10 inches tops yet hes got the job dun for sure pups moving around and ready to pop anytime. im really interested to see how long she can hold in there shes getting huge !

If it help i do about 60 % watter change every 5 days, they eat smelt and shrimp. The temp is 82 however when intruding new watter its close but almost always on the cooler side. My watter perameters are bang on always as far as ammonia, nitrates, ph and nitrites. Tank is a 240 g tank 6 x 2 footprint mostley empty except a small ish corner. i run 3 sump pumps on it for current not including the one on my filter. so my turn over rate it like x14 -16 ish. as far as tank mates everything is more or less placid. 5 large clown loaches, a large green severum, a 17 inch indo tiger, and 2 eels, a 26 inch fire and 15 inch tire track. I did notice that you seamed to have alot of fish in your ray tank, are they stressing your rays ? also with your center peace the male needs to able to flip the female or get underneather her try and ensurer there is eneuff room for this. One thing i have noticed is that when i clean my glass the rays seam to enjoy the sensation of the smooth glass on there bellys. This may give the males more breeding oppertunitys. had fish a long time but still learning with my rays.

Not to steal the thread lol, but whats in your sump? Im setting up a 210 6x2x30inches and still debating on what to put in the sump. Apparently all I basically need is filter socks and pond matrix..but I really want to over filter lol.

Also this info ^ can be handy for you too moose as what ever is in his sump that differs from the usual can keep the water in better shape.
