Confused about "instant cycle". . .

:swear: Darn those snails!!! And yes, it is a HOB filter. I don't even know what kind of snails they are. . they look like they have no shells and are clear. I noticed them once I brought plants into my tank :wall:.

WELL. . I guess only time will tell. I planned on boiling down all of my decorations to kill the snails (I know, I know, along with the beneficiary bacteria), but I guess that's a bit pointless if the filter is just going to carry the snails in any way.

yeah, the boiling works but it ends up needing to be done not quite all at once to keep your BB alive..which could end up just giving the snails a chance to infest whatever you've already cleaned. it would probably have to be like:
boil decorations, leave out of tank
boil substrate, leave out of tank
make sure inside tank is still free of snails, then take out the filter media, make sure filter is free of snails, and replace it the media.
replace media and decorations

though that would probably have to be done over a few days, and still leaves the chance for any hidden "snail egg sacs" to be still around [unless they're like a sort of livebearing snails? i don't know much about snails, just that i have a lot of them!!]. what i tend to do is if my tank is getting especially overwhelmed, i'll pick out whatever snails i can reach without sticking my arm in [i.e. the ones toward the surface, dur] and throw them in either to my puffer fish or my turtle. i can usually get a whole lot out this way, since at different times throughout the day a lot of them will gather toward the surface, and by the time i've gone around the tank once they've started piling up again. over a day or two this really cuts back my population, but in no way eliminates it!! mine all showed up the first time i added life plants from a tank into there [from a tank as in from a tank at the fish store, as opposed to the expensive guaranteed snail-free ones that come in a plastic container from petco]

shell-less snails? i've never heard of that. i'd ask about those in the invertibrates forum

TBH, I'm not even sure they are snails. They are clear, appear to have a clear shell if they even have a shell at all, are about the size of the tip of a large ball point pen (some are a little bigger). I cannot find anything similar when I search for it.

I just searched google videos and found a video that looks just like my "mystery snails." The video states that they are Limpets, Ferrissia wauteri to be specific. After further searches with that name I came across a Limpet known as Acroloxus lacustris. I believe I have found my mystery snail and now just have to figure out how to get rid of it!

Small botia loaches?

Hmm, I'll look into that. What do you think about Kuhli Loaches? Are they as good of snail eaters as the Botia loaches? Any one type of Botia in particular?

No, kuhli loaches do not really eat snails. I would recommend yoyos, zebras or polka dots for a 40 gallon. Get at least 3 because they're social.

Alright, I will check out my LFS to see what they have available. What do you think of this plan: Run my 40 gallon for 24 hours on it's own; place one of the filters I have on my current 15 gallon (it's an Aquaclear 20) into the 40 gallon + the new Aquaclear 70 I just purchased; add new substrate and wood from my old tank and any decorations; then place the Loaches in the 40 gallon along with Tetra Safe Start. Then slowly move over the old fish?

Will it be the same if I don't move the substrate? I don't want snails from my current tank in this new one!! I hate them. I know there is always a chance of them getting in, but I'm hoping to minimize the risk as much as possible while still keeping my tank cycled.

there are fish/critters you can buy that will eat snails and will ad character to your tank. maybe someone here can give examples for you. hope that helps
