Does anyone know how long they can live for??

The reason I ask; lower-jaw polypterus are rare as rockinghorse-s*** here, they aren't allowed to be imported but there are a few around that have been here since before the border was tightened in the mid 90's. I might have the once in a life-time [in NZ anyway] chance of getting hold of a big old congicus. It was in a big display tank at an LFS for years, and AFAIK actually belonged to the owner of the store. It was somewhere between 20-24" IIRC. He sold the store and the bichir vanished and was replaced with a tankfull of discus [boo!]. A guy I know knows someone who now has the congicus, and he said me might sell it for the right price, possibly swapping with my big ornate + cash. He said the fish could be over 20 years old, and would almost certainly be over 12 years old. So, my dilemma is that I really want the fish (I haven't seen it for years BTW) but I don't want to pay a heap for it if its going to die of old age in a year or two!

It is almost impossible to say what the expected life of a captive animal might be. Plus the fact it was wild caught so who knows how old it was then. Sounds like a pretty big gamble if you are talking serious cash.

well a few hundred is a lot for a fish you never seen or no the care it has recieved in the past. you can pay less than a hundred and get a nice fish and raise it up or pay bit more and get a larger one. and I have Congicus that is 14 yr. and it is nice healthy fish. I know a friend of mine has 6 polypterus Endlicheri for 18 years and they are still alive and healthy.

But a few hundred isn't much when the fish is no longer allowed to be imported into the country imo.

if well cared for, 15-20 yrs is no problem, and 20+ is within reason, but beyond that, as tezr said, it's very hard to give a number and say how much longer. Unlike AUL, there's no released record of whats the oldest specimen kept by public aquarium and such. So we just don't know.

Thanks guys. I suppose what I should do is try to get in touch with the guy and see just how much he wants, and have a look at the fish. I haven't seen it for over 3 years, and I knew nothing about polys, all I know is that it was a fairly plain looking big fat lower jaw species.

Hello,

i think it's quite difficult to answer correctly ... but:

In Austria there is a bichir keeper with a Polypterus ornatipinnis, over 60cm (nearly 24") long, this specimen is kept in a zoo in Vienna over 30 years and had been a monster when the zoo got him!

It#s well known that ancient fish tend to get old - sharks, sturgeons and even bichirs too i think. I'm keeping two P.senegalus since 8 years ...

When keeping them under best conditions they will get older than the most other fish kept in aquaria ... but bichir keeping is a "young" hobby with less experience - we will see what time will tell ...

Greetings
Uwe
