Congo puffer care?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Really I feel like that would cause a lot of stress for the puffer if I'm putting the gravel vacuum all the time.

Monstrous is right. U need pristine water as the fish is scaleless and w/o gill plates/ covers. They are risk for disease. 50% is a lot but needed to avoid killing it. It will get used to the wc's.

They aren't that picky but keep ph b/w 6.8 to 7.5 and the temp about 78 degrees. They need to have a varied diet and the things U mentioned are fine. Be careful of snail shells as it can be a bit tough and cause a break.

I know this thread is old, but speaking of shelled organisms, does this puffer need anything specific to keep it's teeth under control? Or am I fine not giving them shelled organisms?

Congo puffers teeth grow slower compared to others. They are piscivores too so it’s shouldn’t be of a concern.

So i'll be completely fine if I never feed it a snail in it's life? Sorry, I just need verification.
I believe so. Will ask Fat Homer Fat Homer as he’s the puffer guru.

Yup, as kno4te kno4te mentioned, no need for snail / crunchy diet since in nature they are piscivores...

Definitely a cool puffer in my books, especially if you can find a red one thats active...

^ good question, is this T.Murius or T.schoutedeni we’re talking about..

As the Spotted Congo Puffer (Schoutedeni) is becoming more widely available and will require a crunchy diet. Good news though is that as mentioned above, they can be housed in groups, given tank is large enough and well decorated / planted...
